Reolink Duo 2: Because two angles are better than one
Introduction
Today, we’re diving into the world of surveillance with an in-depth look at the Reolink Duo 2. This camera, boasting a dual-lens technology, stands out for its expansive coverage and outstanding image quality.
Indeed, it’s a more advanced model than what we’ve seen in the Argus range, which consists of smaller cameras that can be mounted in your vehicle with a battery to deter break-ins.
Now, we’re focusing on a model more suited for homes, offices, and outdoor spaces. Using information sourced from the web, we’ll delve into everything from its physical design to its software features, and technical specifications. Join us as we explore every aspect of the Reolink Duo 2 to give you a comprehensive overview of what it has to offer.
A Brief Overview of the Brand Reolink
Since its inception in 2009, Reolink has established itself as a go-to name in the security field. Committed to delivering top-tier surveillance solutions, the company has earned the trust of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.
As van-lifers who have traveled across Europe, we were particularly impressed by the user-friendliness and reliability of Reolink products we had the opportunity to test, like the Reolink Argus 2E and Argus 3 Pro. Their “Plug and Play” technology is a genuine asset, especially for those of us who are always on the move. Whether you’re looking to secure your camper van or your home, Reolink stands out as the obvious choice.
Discovering the Reolink Duo 2
Unboxing
Upon opening the box, one is immediately struck by the array of components provided. The Reolink Duo 2 camera, regardless of its version, comes with a slew of accessories: a power cable, screws, a mounting plate, sealing rings, a wall guide, and depending on the model, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable.
Visual Tour of the Reolink Duo 2
At first glance, the Reolink Duo 2 distinctively sets itself apart from other IP cameras on the market. Moving away from traditional dome or bullet-shaped designs, it showcases a decidedly contemporary style. Depending on the version, the camera can be metallic or plastic (I’m still trying to figure out the reason for this distinction). Its sharp edges and monochromatic color palette give it a modern and sophisticated look. The sides are sleek, featuring no ventilation, just the Reolink logo.
Regarding power sources, it varies based on the model chosen: POE (Power Over Ethernet) for the POE version, power cable for the WiFi model, and solar and battery for the battery and LTE versions.
The side panels come with threads for attaching the two high-quality antennas, supporting both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. An interesting detail: although marketed as a WiFi camera, the Reolink Duo 2 is equipped with an Ethernet port, making the initial setup much easier. Once this step is completed, the device automatically switches to WiFi mode.
The base of the camera unveils several features. Apart from an additional screw seal, it houses a speaker, allowing users to communicate and address potential intruders via the Reolink mobile app. This speaker can also double as a siren, activated at the push of a button. Additionally, a compartment shielded by a screwed panel facilitates the insertion of an SD card, providing storage ranging from 128GB to 256GB depending on the model.
Features and Testing
Having delved into the design and box contents of the Reolink Duo 2, let’s dive into its technical specifications and our test feedback.
Camera Resolution
The Reolink Duo 2 stands out with its ability to capture images with a resolution of up to 8 megapixels, which translates to 4608 x 1728 pixels (for the POE and Wifi versions; see a summary table later in the article). Even more impressive, it boasts a 180-degree field of view, thus addressing one of the primary limitations of its predecessor, the Reolink Duo.
Recording at 20 frames per second, your videos will be smooth and detailed.
It also supports memory cards of up to 256GB (128GB for the Battery and LTE versions).
Weather Resistance
Designed to withstand the elements, the Reolink Duo 2 comes with an IP66 certification. This means you can set it up outdoors without worrying about the weather. Its broad viewing range further adds to its suitability for optimal outdoor surveillance.
Motion Detection
While the Reolink Duo 2’s motion detection feature is akin to other recent models from the brand, its wider field of view makes it even more efficient.
It’s crucial to properly adjust the detection area to avoid false alarms.
Thankfully, the camera provides options for sensitivity, object size, and alarm delay to tailor detection to your requirements. An added bonus: its innovative pet detection feature, albeit still in beta, can alert you when your furry friend roams nearby.
Exceptional Viewing Angle
One of the camera’s standout features is undoubtedly the ultra-wide viewing angle, reaching a horizontal 180 degrees. This is achieved by combining images from two lenses. Thus, even a large area can be covered by a single camera, with no moment missed, unlike rotating cameras.
Two Lenses are Better than One
Each lens is surrounded by IR LEDs and an extra LED that provides not only illumination at night but also a color image. The external effect gives the feeling of continuous monitoring. The camera, like its predecessor, features an integrated microphone and speaker, motion sensor, and light sensor, enabling automatic backlight activation.
User Experience
Camera management is conducted via the Reolink app on smartphones, or through a computer application or web browser. The two lenses merge to produce a seamless image without any dividing lines. Moreover, the camera is RTSP-compatible, like Home Assistant, allowing for its integration into various home automation setups. Up next, we will discuss the software side of things with the Reolink application.
Application Mobile Reolink
The Reolink mobile application, available for free on iOS and Android, serves as the main access point for the Reolink Duo 2 WiFi camera. Despite the various cameras from the brand, the interface remains consistent, with only minor distinctions for specific features, such as the color night vision of Duo 2.
User Interface
In portrait mode, the app displays a singular view of the camera with its controls. In landscape mode, you can choose shared views (1, 4, or 9 cameras). Every view can be live or static, accessed locally or remotely through a secured link.
Settings and Configuration
Setting up the camera is straightforward. After creating a Reolink account, the camera can be added either through an LAN/RJ45 cable or a QRCode. Most Reolink cameras in this range also come with an ethernet port for easier connection.
Notifications and Alerts
The application allows you to tailor notifications based on your requirements. Alerts can be received through push notifications or via email. Additionally, support for multiple accounts ensures appropriate distribution of notifications.
Recording Options
All Reolink cameras come with a slot for a Micro SD card (up to 256GB). For enhanced security, you can also record on a NAS or network storage. The mobile application further supports real-time local recordings.
AI Recognition
Motion detection has seen enhancements with the recognition of specific objects, such as cars, people, or animals. This greatly reduces false alarms. If you happen to be on the app while one of these elements appears on the screen, you’ll notice a small icon indicating what the camera believes it has identified.
Enhanced Night Vision
Most Reolink cameras offer night vision. The Duo 2 WiFi takes it a step further with a feature that turns black and white recordings into color, making identification easier.
Audio Interaction
With two-way audio, you can communicate through the camera (in case you’re feeling a bit lonely) or listen to the surroundings. Some models, including the Duo 2 WiFi, also come with an integrated alarm to deter potential intruders.
