1. The Algarve in Portugal: The Timeless Classic
Of course, you guessed it, we’re starting with a region we know inside and out. We’ve been there countless times in winter before finally deciding to settle down (*yeah, that’s how much we love it*). The Algarve remains one of the best sunny winter destinations for RV camping, and clearly, we’re not the only ones who think so. As I write this in mid-November, the service areas are already packed to the brim. Proof that this place attracts all the vanlifers looking for a warm winter escape.
As for the weather, even though last winter was particularly long and rainy (*an exception that proves the rule*), the Algarve usually offers a mild climate between 59°F and 64°F. Honestly, it’s a delight. It’s not uncommon to take a stroll on the beach in late December or early January. Not necessarily to sunbathe, let’s be honest, but to enjoy the sea air under a cloudy yet temperate sky. And that, in the middle of winter, is priceless.
The golden cliffs, wild coves, and vast deserted beaches reveal a completely different face in winter. Lagos, Faro, or Tavira become peaceful towns, lively but not overwhelming, perfect for wandering around. The famous Seven Hanging Valleys Trail still offers those spectacular views of Praia da Marinha and the Benagil caves, without the summer crowds.
The village of Carvoeiro is perfect for relaxing after a hike. Several free and secure parking areas are ideal for van parking, making exploration even easier. To dive deeper into your discovery, here are our guides:
Discover Lagos by RV and Explore Faro.

2. Andalusia in Spain: Sun and Culture Galore
Andalusia literally shines in winter. With its famous Costa del Sol and 320 days of sunshine a year, it’s one of the most popular winter camping destinations. Here, temperatures hover comfortably between 15 and 20°C (59 to 68 F°), perfect for enjoying the great outdoors even in the middle of January.
Malaga, Ronda, and the white villages offer a perfect blend of culture and authenticity. For RV travelers, the Aire Camper Málaga Beach, located just 656 feet (200 m) from the beach, is a solid choice: hot water, easy waste disposal, and immediate proximity to the sea… in short, a practical and pleasant spot to park your wheels.
In winter, the beaches are nearly deserted, and the Mediterranean landscapes reveal a soft light, ideal for exploring the region without the summer crowds. The tranquility, sunshine, and low prices make for an experience that’s both authentic and budget-friendly.
And if you’re looking for something more urban, head to Seville. It’s definitely a must-see during your stay in Andalusia. We know the city well, having visited several times (*even during the Christmas holidays, yes, it’s totally doable!*). Seville combines majestic architecture, a warm atmosphere, and sunlit alleys that only Andalusia can offer. We even have a comprehensive guide on this destination to help you explore the city in the best way possible.

3. Sicily in Italy: Adventure at the Foot of the Volcanoes
Sicily captivates with its active Mount Etna and its mild Mediterranean climate. The coast stays around 59-68°F in winter.
Mount Etna offers snowy hikes, and the natural hot springs at Terme di Segesta provide a welcome rest after a day of exploring.
The campgrounds around Etna boast spectacular views of the volcano, perfect for nature lovers.
You can easily find peaceful spots facing the sea. This timeless adventure is ideal for those who appreciate the great outdoors.

4. Sardinia in Italy: Untamed Beauty
Sardinia offers a preserved wild beauty in winter. The temperatures are mild, and there’s less rain compared to other Mediterranean regions.
With deserted beaches and lush hills, it creates absolute tranquility. The Costa Smeralda region remains accessible even in winter, with affordable campgrounds (less than $11/night).
Enjoy untouched nature away from the summer crowds, with some wild camping spots allowed.

5. Crete in Greece: A Timeless Escape
Crete offers a unique winter vanlife experience. The ferry from Piraeus takes about 10 hours, but keep in mind that schedules are limited during winter, so be sure to book ahead.
You can expect a very mild climate and a rich culture. Local markets and archaeological sites like Knossos are accessible without the summer crowds.
This authentic winter vanlife connects you to a vibrant island during the off-tourist season.

6. The Canary Islands in Spain: The Eternal Spring
The Canary Islands offer an eternal spring with temperatures between 68-77°F all year round. You can count on warm weather, even in January.
The ferry from Cadiz costs around $180 (170€) and takes up to 44 hours to reach Tenerife. Renting a vehicle on-site is often more economical.
Islands like Fuerteventura provide ideal surfing conditions year-round, even in winter. With unique volcanic landscapes and stable weather, this archipelago is a winter dream destination.

7. Morocco: Sun, Adventure, and a Small Budget
Another winter sunny destination for RV camping that we know quite well is Morocco. Sure, it’s not Europe, but it’s easy to get there from the old continent, so we thought, why not add it as a bonus? We’ve been there twice, once by RV and once by plane, both times between October and December. And believe me, the change of scenery is total. You step into a lifestyle that’s completely different from what you know in Europe (*and that’s exactly what makes the experience so memorable*).
When it comes to the weather, you’ll be well taken care of. The temperatures hover around 63 to 72°F in winter, which allows you to fully enjoy the coastline, the souks, the local markets, and the lively little streets. Besides the climate, Morocco remains one of the cheapest destinations for RV travel. The prices are frankly unbeatable. It’s not uncommon to grab a small sandwich filled with meat and veggies for about $1.60. And even though some prices have slightly increased in a few cities, it’s still extremely affordable compared to Europe.
I have a personal favorite: Essaouira, a coastal town with a unique atmosphere, featuring delicious street food, a peaceful medina, and wind-swept beaches (*a true delight*). On the other hand, good luck if you decide to settle near Marrakech. The traffic, hustle, and intensity of the city can make parking and logistics a bit more complicated.
One important point: in Morocco, it’s best to avoid free camping spots. The safest and most comfortable option is to stick to campgrounds and designated areas. They are plentiful, affordable, and often very well-equipped. This will allow you to enjoy the country without stress while respecting local customs.
Your Checklist for a Smooth Winter Road Trip
Before You Hit the Road
Good preparation is the key to a successful winter road trip. No worries, I’ll guide you step by step with this handy checklist.
- Check Your Documents: ID or passport, vehicle registration, insurance certificate. If you’re crossing countries outside the EEA like Morocco, Albania, or Turkey, ask your insurer for a green card. In Europe, the green sticker is no longer required since April 2024.
- Plan Your Route (without holding back): Book ferries in advance for Sardinia (from Italy) or Crete (from Piraeus). Crossings can take up to 12 hours, so plan stops to avoid fatigue and extra charges.
- Think About “Transition Stops”: Avoid sudden temperature changes. For instance, travel through the Camargue, then Catalonia before reaching Andalusia. This gradual approach makes the journey more enjoyable and lets you discover less touristy towns.
On the Road: Finding the Best Spots and Staying Warm
While on the road, some simple tips can maximize your comfort.
- Use Park4Night or Caramaps: in winter, some spots are closed. Always read recent comments to avoid unpleasant surprises. In Spain, wild camping is prohibited, but parking is allowed on roads as long as you don’t set up an awning. Check local rules by municipality, like in Malaga where restrictions are strict.
- Traveling Off-Season Saves Money: local markets, restaurants, and off-season spots are cheaper and less crowded. In the Algarve, on the Costa del Sol, or in Crete, prices drop by up to 30% in winter, and RV parks are often available without reservations.
- My little tip: park on the edge of a forest. A study from the CNRS shows that forests maintain a temperature 1 to 2°C (1.8 to 3.6°F) warmer in winter. This helps preserve your van’s battery life and reduces heating consumption.
- Finding the right spots is key. We’ve shared all our tips on places to sleep on a road trip, with specific recommendations for the Algarve, Costa del Sol, the French Riviera, Sicily, and Crete.
So, ready to swap your beanie for some sunglasses?
Ready to trade your beanie for sunglasses? In winter, southern Europe (the Portuguese Algarve (Lagos, Faro), the Spanish Costa del Sol (Malaga, Ronda), or the French Riviera (Nice, Cannes)) offers temperatures between 59 and 68°F and plenty of sunshine. Fewer tourists, lower prices, and more accessible parking. Local markets and unspoiled landscapes will make you forget about the continental chill.
Heading south lowers your energy consumption: less heating needed, solar panels charge more efficiently, and you can enjoy more outdoor activities. Less congested roads, available camper spots, and affordable rental and service prices.
Freedom to choose your route, morning sunshine, and adventure await you. Explore cultural sites (like the Alcazaba in Malaga), coastal hikes in the Algarve, or Provençal markets. Discover Europe differently, away from the high season prices.
Don’t wait any longer! Get your van ready, check the tires, and head south. Winter isn’t a constraint; it’s an invitation to experience a unique adventure. Trust me, you won’t regret this sunny getaway. Freedom, sunshine, and adventure await you.
