What is Seville, Spain?

History of Seville

This city, once a prominent figure on the world stage, is an intoxicating blend of scents, colors, and stories. Even today, it sparks the curiosity of wanderers seeking adventure and knowledge.

Capital of Andalusia, Seville boasts a multicultural history that spans over 2200 years. Legend has it that the heroic Hercules founded the city, and it has been shaped by various peoples. The Phoenicians, skilled traders, laid the initial foundations before the city became an important port under Roman rule. Let’s not forget the Vandals and Visigoths, who also left their marks, albeit more subtly, on the city’s historical fabric.

Then came the era of splendor: under the rule of the Muslims from the 8th to the 13th century, Seville reached a peak of glory and opulence. Wander through the winding streets of the Alcázar district, and you’ll feel the breath of this era when the city was a thriving cultural and economic center of Al-Andalus. The Muslim golden age gave rise to architectural marvels, some of which still defy the centuries. But let’s sit on a warm, dry stone, for the wheel of time turned, and after the Reconquista, Seville became a key city in the trade between Spain and its New World colonies. The Spanish Golden Age is reflected in the splendor of its buildings, and in the streets of the city, one can almost hear the echoes of the conquerors and merchants who sailed into the unknown.

Geographic Location

Seville, flamboyant and sunlit, is a jewel of Andalusia, nestled in the heart of a vast plain in southern Spain. Less than a hundred kilometers away, the Guadalquivir River winds its way, adding a poetic touch to the landscape. From the north waft the fragrances of Cordoba, while to the west, the gaze can almost embrace the Atlantic Ocean in Huelva.

Not far away, the Sierra Morena mountains, like ancient guardians, shape the horizon and invite exploration, while Doñana National Park, like a bridge between land and water, offers a sanctuary to a vibrant biodiversity.

How to Get to Seville?

To reach Seville by campervan from the nearest cities, you’ll need to take the A-49 highway from Huelva, the A-4 from Cordoba, or the A-92 from Malaga. Follow the signs to Seville, along the Guadalquivir River. Safe travels!
AAAAH, Spanish roads are hit or miss. The good news: highways are free. The bad news: the highways are of poor quality. Of course, Seville being a large city, you should avoid driving a campervan through it; the main spots will be found in the outskirts.
