Le Jardim offers a unique dining experience with its hidden charm and varied settings. The francesinha is a must-try, but the location may be challenging to find for some.

Le Jardim in Tomar is the kind of restaurant you can miss ten times without ever realizing it’s there. And at the same time, that’s exactly what makes it charming. It’s not a place that imposes itself; it’s a place that you discover.

A hidden restaurant in Tomar

To get there, you have to walk to the right of the five-star hotel on the main square of Tomar. Then walk about a hundred meters, and on the left… enter a building.

Not a restaurant. In a building.

A hall, doors on the left, on the right, nothing very clear. And at the back, only the restaurant. Already there, you start to wonder: “ok… are we really in the right place?”

And it’s precisely this moment of doubt that makes the arrival interesting. You’re not just consuming a restaurant; you’re discovering it.

A restaurant… or several?

Le Jardim doesn’t have just one room. It has several. You pass through doors, you change rooms, and each time you encounter a new atmosphere.

Honestly, you really get the feeling of being in several restaurants in one.

We went twice. Once in the summer, in the inner garden, softer, more pleasant. And another time in March, when it was cooler. The garden was there, but we were seated inside. And there, it’s a different atmosphere.

A simple, almost cold atmosphere… but authentic

In our room, we were clearly surrounded by Portuguese people. No staging, no elaborate decor to please. Just people coming to eat.

The room was quite rudimentary, with old wooden furniture. A bit raw, almost old-fashioned. Visually, yes, it’s even a bit cold. Nothing to do with the garden.

But that’s not bothersome. Because very quickly, you understand that this is not where it matters.

The warmth is in the plate and in the welcome.

The beginning of the Portuguese meal

Even before ordering, there are the famous cutlery. Bread, cheese, olives. Nothing complicated, nothing spectacular.

But it does the job. You nibble, you sip a glass of red wine, you chat… and before you know it, the meal has already begun.

It’s simple, effective, and totally in the spirit of the place.

The francesinha: the real topic

We already knew what we were going to eat. In the Algarve, there are few good francesinhas. So as soon as we head a bit further north, we don’t think for long.

At Le Jardim, there’s a choice: classic, special, house, vegetarian, chicken…

Caroline took the chicken version. I took the one from Casa.

When the dish arrives, you understand right away.

A metal plate, a thick and shiny sauce covering everything, a slightly runny egg on top, melted cheese… and on the side, well-golden homemade fries.

Visually, it’s heavy. You know it’s going to hit hard.

A surprise: it’s not heavy

And yet… it’s not.

We’ve had francesinhas that were way too heavy, almost sickening. Here, not at all.

It goes down easily. It’s generous, but well-balanced. You don’t struggle with your plate.

Result: it was devoured in a few minutes.

The moment that says it all

The most striking moment is simple: no one was talking anymore.

We started eating… and total silence.

And that silence says it all.

When a dish silences everyone at the table, it has already won.

What we really remember

Le Jardim is not the most beautiful restaurant. It’s not the warmest visually. And it’s clearly not the easiest to find.

But that’s not why we go there.

We go there to eat something good, simple, sincere. And on that, it ticks all the boxes.

A somewhat raw place, a popular atmosphere, and a plate that does the job without discussion.

A popular restaurant, no frills, but with a plate that satisfies everyone.
