A discreet, dependable Tavira favourite, firmly in our top 3 for its consistency and value for money.
There are restaurants that you try once, thinking it was good, and then you forget about them. And then there’s Nikita, where we come back a good ten times a year without ever getting tired of it.. which is quite something in Tavira.
Nikita is exactly the kind of place you don’t find right away. Hidden in a small alley, just behind the street that runs along the Rio Gilão, with its mini-stage and small wooden terrace.. the kind of place you keep a bit to yourself before eventually talking about it to everyone (so there you go, it’s done).
Why we come back a good ten times a year
When we’re asked about our favorite restaurant in Tavira, we always hesitate for a second.. because Nikita is a place as discreet as the memory it leaves. And yet, upon reflection, it is definitely part of our top 3 in the city. For its consistency, for its value for money, it’s really solid.
We have never been disappointed there. Never that little moment of blah that we always end up having in overly touristy places, where you mainly pay for the location. Here, it’s the opposite: a true safe bet, not just a one-night crush.
It’s also a restaurant where we love to bring people, and that’s probably the best test there is. When you trust a place enough to take the people you love there, it really stands the test of time. And Nikita, it holds up season after season.
An alley, a wooden terrace, and swallows
This little retreat from the thoroughfare is already part of the charm. The alley, the bougainvilleas all around, and at certain times of the year, swallow nests hanging just above. When we have the chance to eat on the small wooden terrace, we see them making their trips to the nest, with all the little background noise that comes with it. A silly little detail, but it’s exactly what gives Nikita its true personality.
Inside, the space unfolds more in length than in width (like many restaurants in Tavira), with blue and white azulejos setting the mood on the walls. It’s narrow, discreet, almost secretive.. the kind of place where you quickly feel at ease.
A cuisine you won’t find elsewhere in Tavira
What brings us back are primarily the plates. The menu changes very little from year to year, with very few updates, and strangely, that’s not a flaw at all: you find dishes that you won’t encounter anywhere else in town, with a very recognizable way of cooking.
The general impression is a strong local base that allows for a slight French touch.. logical, since the chef has cooked in France and retained some techniques. This is especially noticeable in the sauces, all flavored without exception, and in the cooking of the vegetables, which is really well done. It’s the kind of detail that betrays true mastery behind the stove.
Salads less mundane than the local average
In Portugal, salad is often just lettuce, tomato, and onion, and that’s it. At Nikita, it’s something else entirely, with more elaborate offerings: warm goat cheese salad, asparagus salad, parmesan salad.. just that already gives a real identity to the menu.
The dishes that keep us coming back
The list of those that leave an impression on us is long. There’s the famous bouillabaisse, pasta with wild boar and its wild boar meatballs, pasta with prawns and their beautiful bisque sauce. When it comes to meat, we easily fall for the lamb shank or the confit duck.
On the vegetarian side, Caroline swears by the beloved vegetarian tagine (which also costs almost nothing) and the ratatouille. And Xavier, he always comes back to the pasta.. of course. Each visit, we promise to try something else, and every time, we end up back with our little classics.
The desserts that make us melt
We rarely have the courage to skip dessert at Nikita, and that’s probably for the best. Lavender-vanilla crème brûlée, apple crumble with its scoop of vanilla ice cream, orange chocolate mousse.. we have our little habits, and we take them seriously.
A team we enjoy seeing again
Nikita also has a really nice team, and that counts a lot in the pleasure of going back. The chef, we don’t see often in the dining area (he’s in the kitchen, doing his thing). However, we often see a woman, whom we think (without being entirely sure) is his partner, and a young man, a family acquaintance, who is also very endearing. They speak several languages, and just to see them again, we want to push the door open.
Who it’s for (and who it’s not for)
Let’s be honest: this is not a restaurant where you’re going to hear much Portuguese. You mainly hear a lot of English, and a bit of French too. And who is Nikita for, really? For those who really enjoy good food, simply put. You need to like a bit of everything, not be picky: with spices and such, some may not connect. Junk food lovers won’t find their fix here. We think you need a true palate to really appreciate what this cuisine offers.
Practical information
PS: if you find yourself on the terrace one summer evening, look up between courses. The swallows are serving before us.
