Description
The most advanced 360 camera from Insta360 is this one. The X5 films all around it in 8K, withstands water and shocks, and lets you choose your framing once you’re back. On paper, it’s the Swiss Army knife of immersive imagery.
Let’s be transparent, because that’s how we operate: Insta360 offered us the X5 to test and use daily. We preferred to steer our choice towards another model, simply because for our usage (vlogging and travel, casual), it was a bit too much for nothing. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, on the contrary. It means it’s aimed at someone else than us, and we’ll tell you who.
Because the X5 is primarily a sports and action camera. The kind of device that makes perfect sense when you’re moving, when the perfect angle is impossible to anticipate, when you want to film first and think about editing later.
Who is this camera for?
If you do windsurfing, parachuting, mountain biking, skiing, diving, or any activity where the action goes in all directions, this is exactly for you. The 360° view captures the entirety of the scene, and you select the best moments afterward, without having to aim during the effort.
For the travel content creator who likes to crop in editing and produce spectacular shots (drone effect without a drone, shots that circle around you), it checks the boxes too. In a van or camper, the usage is clear: place it on the dashboard to film yourself driving without pointing anything at yourself, or extend it out of a pole through the window for a wide shot of the scenery. If you’re just looking to talk to the camera or film simply, it will be oversized for that need.
Features to know
The real leap of the X5 is its two 1/1.28 inch sensors, significantly larger than on previous 360 models. Concretely, better performance in low light and more detail. It films in 8K at 360° (7680×3840), goes up to 5.7K at 60 fps and 4K at 120 fps in single-lens mode, and shoots 72 MP photos.
On the field, the FlowState stabilization with horizon lock keeps the image steady even when it shakes, the dynamic range of 13.5 stops recovers blown-out skies, and it’s waterproof up to 15 m without a case. A detail that changes everything over time: the lenses are replaceable, so a scratch no longer condemns the camera.
Filming in 360, choosing the angle afterward
That’s the whole principle, and it’s what makes 360 so practical in action. You start recording, you live your moment, and in editing, you decide where to look, frame by frame. The perfect angle is never missed since everything has been filmed. The InstaFrame mode also outputs a classic cropped version at the same time as the complete sphere, to have a ready-to-publish result without spending hours on it.
Action, sport, and water: what it can handle
Waterproof to 15 meters directly, without a bubble or case, it follows in surfing, snorkeling, or under pouring rain without flinching. It withstands temperatures from -20°C to 40°C, the FlowState smooths out vibrations from the handlebars or board, and the compact format of 200 g fits anywhere without hindrance. This is typically where the motorcycle, diving, or skiing packs make sense.
8K, large sensor, and low light
The PureVideo mode enhances image clarity when light decreases, supported by the large 1/1.28 inch sensors and the 13.5 stops of dynamic range. You recover detail in shadows as well as in highlights, and the I-Log profile leaves room for those who color grade their videos. In photos, the 72 MP provide well-defined immersive panoramas.
The 360 workflow, let’s talk about it frankly
This is the point where we are honest, because it directly concerns us: a 360 requires a bit of editing. The raw output has this slight rounded fisheye effect that doesn’t please everyone (us first, for our style of videos). The good news is that the Insta360 app and Studio software are getting better at correcting this effect and provide a nice flat shot. But yes, you have to account for an additional processing step compared to a classic camera. If that doesn’t scare you, the creative potential is huge.

Our honest position on the X5
We won’t give you a fake test: we haven’t used it daily, we preferred another device for our van and vlog usage. But we know the Insta360 range, and in the field of action creators, the X5 is at the top of what’s available in 360 cameras. Our advice can be summed up in one sentence: if you move and want to capture everything, go for it; if you just want to film yourself sitting, look for a classic camera or a gimbal instead.
