Description

The Insta360 X6 is a 360 camera that records in all directions at once, in 8K at 50 frames per second. The principle: you no longer aim at anything while filming, you choose the framing afterwards from an image that already contains the entire scene.

It is the replacement for the X5, with a significantly larger sensor, increased battery life, and especially two modes that allow you to use it like a traditional camera when you don't want 360.

Who is the Insta360 X6 for?

For two main profiles. First, for those who want to capture a memory without having to compose it: travel, family outings, boat rides, everything you want to capture without spending the moment behind a screen. Then for outdoor sports, wakesurfing, parachuting, skiing, or mountain biking, where you seek the maximum of shots and field of view without ever touching the camera.

However, if you are systematically looking for the perfect framing and the best possible definition, this may not be the right tool: the 360 shifts the framing from shooting to editing.

Filming without aiming

The two lenses cover the entire scene, which eliminates the framing phase. The included pole extends up to 114 cm and disappears from the image, giving an overhead viewpoint from a third person. In practice, you place the camera or hold it out, and you don't touch it anymore.

Sensor and image quality

Dual Sony 1/1.1 inch square sensor developed for 360, for a claimed equivalent to a 1 inch sensor. Compared to the X5: 33% more surface area, two times larger pixels in 8K, three times more light per pixel, and 14.5 stops of dynamic range versus 13.5.

The processing is handled by three chips, one etched in 4 nm, distributed between noise reduction, colorimetry, and stitching the two images together. The X6 films in 8K50, photographs in 120 MP, and records natively in Dolby Vision with 10 bits across all modes.

Three shooting modes

The 360 mode captures everything. The InstaFrame mode automatically follows a person, animal, or object and outputs a flat 4K video directly, with no cropping needed afterwards. The single-lens mode transforms the camera into a classic action cam: 5K at 60 frames per second, 4K at 120 frames per second in slow motion, and 170 degrees in ultra-wide angle.

You can therefore use this camera without ever manipulating a spherical image.

Battery life and storage

Xtreme battery of 2600 mAh rated for 140 minutes of continuous 8K, which is 51% more than the X5, with a recharge from 0 to 80% in 24 minutes. On our first outing, a boat ride lasting thirty to fifty minutes, the charge hardly moved.

The camera has 47 GB of internal storage: you can film without a memory card. The microSD slot exists, under the battery cover and on the side of it, but it is very discreet and not immediately visible.

Water resistance and durability

Certified IP68 and waterproof up to 20 meters without a case, compared to 15 meters on the X5, and up to 60 meters with the diving case. The covers for the USB port and battery compartment are firm and well-sealed, allowing you to approach the camera to water without hesitation.

The weak point remains the lenses, which are bulged and exposed. They are replaceable, more resistant to wear than those of the X5, and 60% cheaper to change.

What to know before buying

A 360 image does not open in just any editing software. To view and export, you must go through the Insta360 app and software, taking the time to reproject and choose angles. What you gain in shooting is paid for in post-production, and it's better to know this beforehand.

Also note: the automatic AI editing highlighted at launch is also available on the X5. This is not a feature exclusive to the X6.

Why buy the Insta360 X6?

Because it solves a problem that few people articulate: the need to choose between enjoying a moment and filming it. And because between waterproofing, battery life, and internal storage, it can be taken without preparation.

Two packs are available. The most complete one adds a second battery and its charging case, which also serves as a power bank to recharge a phone thanks to its retractable cable. This is the most useful detail when traveling, and it does not appear on any manufacturer's specification sheet.

Our verdict

4.5
4.5/5 — Excellent Note from the editorial team Vantour

Benefits

  • Filming without aiming or looking at the screen, framing in post-production
  • Dual Sony 1/1.1" sensor equivalent to 1 inch, 8K50 and 14.5 stops
  • Battery life that lasts without flinching, 140 minutes announced in 8K30
  • 47 GB of internal storage, you can leave without a microSD card
  • IP68 20 m and firm hatches: we approach water without thinking about it
  • Three cameras in one: 360, auto tracking in flat 4K, single lens 5K60

Disadvantages

  • Proprietary software required for viewing and exporting
  • What we gain on the field, we lose in post-production
  • Bulging and exposed lenses, to be protected (replaceable)
  • Automatic AI editing is also coming to the X5
  • Very discreet microSD slot, on the side of the battery

For those who want to keep a memory without having to compose it, and for outdoor sports where you want the maximum of shots without touching the camera. The first 360 camera that convinced us while we left skeptical. However, if you are still looking for the best framing and definition, we are not so sure: 360 shifts the framing from shooting to editing, and imposes the software ecosystem of Insta360.
