Adega Típica in Aveiro: a place you don’t expect… and won’t forget

Right across from a small gourmet market that we never managed to see open — yes, two visits to Aveiro and still closed — is
Adega Típica. A place everyone talks about, almost systematically recommended by the local merchants.
So naturally, we go there with curiosity… but also with a little expectation behind.

Upon arrival, the first reflex: take a look at the prices displayed at the entrance. And there, we won’t lie, there is a small moment of hesitation.
It seems a bit expensive. Nothing shocking, but enough to raise the question. Except that in reality, it’s enough to understand
the restaurant’s operation for everything to change: here, you order in full portion or half portion.
And a full portion, clearly, is easily shared.

In fact, it’s the waiter who will confirm this to us, almost before we even have time to make a mistake. We are about to order two dishes,
quite logically, and he cuts us off:

“No, take one full portion for two, it will be more than enough.”

And there, of course, it changes everything. Because this kind of remark is not heard everywhere. Xavier points it out right away:
no upselling, no strategy to inflate the bill, just honest advice. And by following this advice, we end up with a meal
much more interesting in terms of price than expected. Just goes to show, first impressions…

An atmosphere that doesn’t try to please… and that’s exactly what works

Inside, the place makes no effort to seduce in the modern sense of the term. And that’s precisely what gives it charm.
Caroline immediately notices the high chairs lined up along the bar, this way of being able to sit two side by side,
almost as if we are part of the decor. The wood, the objects hanging on the walls, the whole gives a feeling of an old, lively place,
that hasn’t been designed to be pretty… but to last.

Xavier, on the other hand, speaks of a tavern. The place is rather dark, almost raw, with this impression of entering a cellar
where one comes to eat seriously. Behind the bar, a barbecue, and especially this small opening to a second room, more discreet,
with azulejos on the walls. Nothing is spectacular, but everything is coherent. We are elsewhere, and you can feel it.

The moment the dish arrives… and everything becomes obvious

Then comes the famous bacalhau gratinado. And there, first reaction: the dish is huge. Really. We look at each other wondering if we have
overestimated our appetite. And then we start eating… and the question disappears very quickly.

Because it’s exactly the kind of dish that doesn’t look like much on paper, but works perfectly.
Xavier describes it very well: crunchiness with the cheese, creaminess with the cream, something generous,
comforting, without being overwhelming. The kind of plate where there aren’t a thousand ingredients, but everything is well done.

Caroline, on the other hand, gets straight to the point: a real delight. And above all, an important detail, we finish the dish without difficulty,
without that feeling of having eaten too much. It’s hearty, yes, but balanced. And that changes everything.

What is Baccalhau Com Natas?

Bacalhau com natas is one of those iconic dishes of Portuguese cuisine, even if its exact origin remains quite vague. It is mainly found in family kitchens and traditional restaurants, where it stands out as a softer and creamier version of the famous bacalhau. The principle is simple but ruthlessly effective: shredded cod (bacalhau), potatoes, onions, all bound with a creamy sauce, often enhanced with a touch of oven-baked cheese.

A restaurant that truly lives day by day

There’s also a detail we love, which perfectly summarizes the spirit of the place: the menus are
handwritten every day. The dishes change, sometimes certain ones are missing, and everything is readjusted based on what is available.
Nothing is fixed, nothing is standardized.

It may seem trivial, but in reality, it says a lot. We are in a restaurant that adapts, that cooks with what it has,
and that does not seek to give the illusion of a perfect menu. And that makes the experience even more authentic.

Why we would go back without hesitation

In the end, Adega Típica is not a spectacular restaurant. It’s not a place that seeks to impress.
But that’s exactly why it leaves a mark.

Between the honest service, the tavern atmosphere, the perfectly mastered dish, and this overall feeling of sincerity,
we leave with the impression of having found a true place. The kind of address we naturally recommend,
without needing to overdo it.
