You arrive in Dubai, your phone connects immediately, you launch a WhatsApp call home to say you’ve arrived… and nothing. The screen spins in vain. Welcome to the great Emirati peculiarity: here, WhatsApp and FaceTime calls are blocked on local networks (text messages go through, but the call remains silent, and no one warns you before you leave).
Good news: we’ve dug deep into the subject for you, operator by operator, from the Marina business district to the desert dunes, to save you both a painful roaming bill and the frustration of not being able to call your loved ones via video.
We will review the three main options for having internet in Dubai, give you the real prices, explain clearly how to unblock WhatsApp and FaceTime without risky tricks, and honestly tell you where it works and where it struggles. Goal: to save you time, a few dozen pounds, and especially your calls.
Why you need a real internet solution in Dubai
Let’s be clear for a moment: yes, you can rely on your hotel’s WiFi. But in Dubai, as soon as you step out of the lobby, data becomes quickly essential. GPS to navigate between Downtown, the Marina, and Deira, Careem or Uber for a taxi without haggling, translating a menu, booking a desert excursion or a ticket to the top of the Burj Khalifa, and of course, the poolside story to share live.
But there is an even more sensitive use here than elsewhere: staying in touch with your loved ones. And this is where Dubai poses a real problem that neither Morocco, Thailand, nor most destinations do. Calls made via apps (WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger) are blocked on Emirati networks. We’ll get back to this in detail, but keep in mind that your internet solution will also determine whether you can, yes or no, call home via video.
Three options are available to you: use your UK plan while roaming, buy a local SIM card on-site from Du or e&, or get a Holafly eSIM Dubai from home before you leave. We’ll go through them all, from the trickiest to the most convenient.
Solution 1: will your UK plan work in Dubai?
Let’s be blunt: Dubai isn’t Europe. Free EU roaming doesn’t apply here post-Brexit, and the UAE sits in every UK network’s most expensive “Rest of World” zone. Here’s the operator-by-operator reality:
Three. The UAE falls under “Go Roam Around the World” at £7/day, with cheaper multi-day passes (3 days £17.50, 7 days £35, 14 days £84) and a 12 GB fair-use cap outside Europe. The Data Passport add-on gives unlimited data at £7/day.
Vodafone. Rest-of-World roaming costs around £7.86/day on top of your plan, up to your fair-use allowance.
O2. The O2 Travel Bolt On is £7/day for the UAE (unlimited minutes, texts and data within fair use).
EE. The worst value here: the Zone 1 travel pass is around £8.45/day for roughly 150 MB. Skip it for a real holiday.
Budget MVNOs (Giffgaff, Tesco, Voxi, Lebara). Most don’t cover the UAE in any roaming pass. If you’re on one of these, assume no UAE roaming and plan for an eSIM instead.
The catch: even the best UK pass (Three’s 7-day at £35) costs more than a whole eSIM or local SIM. And here’s the Dubai-specific twist: roaming on your UK plan still routes through the local Emirati network, so it does NOT unblock WhatsApp and FaceTime calls. You pay a premium and still can’t ring home on WhatsApp.
You’ll find the UK networks and their UAE coverage just below, so you can see at a glance how yours stacks up.

Conclusion on the UK plan option: okay for data if you have an O2 or Three day pass, but it’s pricey and it still doesn’t solve the call issue. For everyone else, let’s move on to the two real solutions below.
Du, e&: the panorama of local operators
Two operators share the Emirates, and the choice slightly changes your experience, especially if your stay goes off the beaten path of the city.
e& (formerly Etisalat) is the historical operator, number one in coverage. It’s with them that you have the least unpleasant surprises: the city of course, but also the entire coast, the desert, and the road to Hatta in the mountains. It’s the largest 5G network in the country. Good to know: e& offers a free tourist eSIM of 10 GB valid for 24 hours upon arrival at Dubai airport, a simple QR code to scan after immigration.
Du is the challenger, younger and often simpler for tourists. Very good coverage in the city (Downtown, the Marina, Abu Dhabi) and along the coast, a bit less consistent in the vast desert. Useful detail: it’s the network that the Holafly eSIM runs on in the Emirates. Du also provides a free tourist SIM of 1 GB valid for 24 hours at the DXB immigration counter.
A crucial common point between the two, and this is THE thing to understand about Dubai: with a local SIM Du or e&, your WhatsApp and FaceTime calls remain blocked. It’s regulatory, not an operator issue. On-site, only the Botim and C’Me apps are allowed for calls, and they often come with a fee. In other words, the local SIM offers you cheap data but doesn’t allow your usual calls.
That’s the overview. Now, the details of the advantages and disadvantages.
Use your UK plan abroad thanks to roaming agreements
Buy a local SIM card to benefit from local rates

How much does a SIM card cost in Dubai in July 2026
We’ll give you the ballpark figures because prices fluctuate and tourist plans regularly change names (but the ranges remain quite stable).
First reflex to know: the tourist SIM card itself is almost free, even completely free at the airport. Du gives 1 GB for 24 hours, e& offers a 10 GB eSIM for 24 hours, enough to order a taxi and notify the hotel without spending anything. Perfect for a short layover, insufficient for a longer stay.
For longer stays, tourist packages hover around 49 dirhams (about £12) for a small data allowance with Du, and around 79 to 125 dirhams (£17 to £27) with e& for 4 to 8 GB over 28 days with some call minutes. Nothing outrageous, but significantly more expensive per GB than in Egypt or Asia, and still with the same limitation: no WhatsApp or FaceTime calls, and a mandatory visit to the counter with a passport.
Here’s a current and numerical overview of the local SIM cards you can buy on-site from Du or e&, with their current plans and prices:
United Arab Emirates: local SIM cards available for your stay
The UAE's historic operator and the coverage leader: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, the desert, Hatta and the whole coast. The country's largest 5G network. Worth knowing: it gives away a free tourist eSIM (10 GB / 24 h) on arrival at Dubai airport (DXB), just scan a QR code after immigration. Heads-up: on a local e& SIM, WhatsApp and FaceTime calls stay blocked (only Botim and C'Me are allowed).
The UAE's challenger, younger and often simpler for a tourist. Very good coverage in the cities (Dubai, Abu Dhabi) and along the coast, a little weaker deep in the desert. It's the network the Holafly eSIM runs on in the UAE. Du hands out a free tourist SIM (1 GB / 24 h) at the immigration desk at Dubai airport. Like e&, a local Du SIM does not unblock WhatsApp/FaceTime calls.

Buy your SIM card on-site or in advance from the UK?
Three main ways to equip yourself with mobile internet in Dubai. We’ve scrutinized them all, here’s our honest feedback on each.
No counter at the airport, no passport to present. You download the eSIM via the email or QR code received after purchase, and you are connected as soon as you land at DXB. Most importantly, since the traffic goes through an international network and not through Du or e&, your WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work again. Compatible with almost all smartphones since 2018 (iPhone XS+, Galaxy S20+, Pixel 3+).
Cost: £16 to £45 depending on the duration, unlimited. Code LAPLANETEDECARO for -5% discount.
Consider if: you want to keep your WhatsApp/FaceTime calls, you don’t want to waste time upon arrival, you want to keep your UK number active in parallel.
The cheapest over time if you consume a lot of data, and you get a real Emirati number, useful for booking a restaurant or calling a driver. But behind that, you pay in procedures (passport required, registration at the counter) and most importantly, your WhatsApp and FaceTime calls remain blocked: it’s a local SIM, so subject to Emirati filtering.
Cost: SIM free to £12, data packages from £12 to £27 depending on volume.
Consider if: you’re staying long, you consume a lot of data, you need a local number, and you can do without app calls.
An old-school solution that still has its followers, especially in family or group settings: you connect your phone, tablet, and computer to the same hotspot. Convenient for sharing, but it’s one more device to carry and recharge, and depending on the network used, app call blocking may also apply.
Cost: £5 to £10 per day for rental.
Consider if: you’re traveling with several people, you need to share a stable connection, or you don’t want to mess with the settings of your main smartphone.
Holafly Dubai: why it’s our recommendation
Let’s be honest for a second. On paper, the local SIM Du or e& is cheaper per GB, we won’t deny it. But in Dubai, the real issue isn’t just the price: it’s being able to call your loved ones normally. And on this specific point, the local SIM leaves you stranded.
With Holafly:
- you buy from your couch in the UK before leaving
- you activate in two clicks just before boarding
- you arrive in Dubai already connected, without going through a counter
- your WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work again, without VPN or tricks
- you keep your UK number active in parallel (two profiles on the same eSIM chip)
- you return to the UK, the eSIM expires automatically, end of story
Two limits to know, and we prefer to be transparent. First, the unlocking of calls via an eSIM works in the vast majority of cases but is not guaranteed 100% depending on settings and timing: it’s the most reliable option, not a magic promise. Secondly, connection sharing (hotspot) is restricted on the Holafly eSIM: if you plan to connect your computer permanently or share for the whole family, aim for a local SIM or a pocket Wi-Fi. For standard smartphone use, it’s a non-issue.
In short, it’s the solution we recommend to the vast majority of travelers heading to Dubai for a few days to two weeks, precisely because it solves the number one problem of the destination.

Network coverage in Dubai and the Emirates: where it works, where it struggles
A quick overview, because between a tower in the Marina and a night camping in the desert, the network experience is completely different.
It works well
- Downtown, the Marina, Business Bay: 4G everywhere, 5G very present in the newer neighborhoods.
- Shopping malls (Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates): solid 4G/5G and complementary free WiFi.
- Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and the coastal axis: dense coverage, especially with e&.
- Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah beaches: stable 4G up to the water’s edge.
It struggles
- Deep desert (Liwa, Rub al-Khali, camps): the signal drops quickly off the main tracks.
- Dune safaris: it works in tourist areas, but drops as you go deeper.
- Hatta mountains and wadis: decent e& coverage on the road, gaps in the gorges.
- At sea (dhow cruise, offshore trips): network weakens as you leave the coast.
WhatsApp, FaceTime, and layovers: unlocking calls in Dubai without hassle
This is THE topic specific to the Emirates, one that most guides brush over in two lines. We take the time to lay it all out because it can change your entire stay.
What’s blocked, what works. In the Emirates, the telecom regulator only licenses a couple of operators to provide internet calls. The upshot, on a local network: WhatsApp, Telegram and iMessage text messages go through, but WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype and Messenger calls are blocked, audio and video alike. This applies whether you’re on a Du SIM, an e& SIM, or even roaming if the connection is routed through the Emirati network.
The officially authorized apps. On-site, two applications are legal for calls: Botim and C’Me. They work, but often require a paid subscription, and your contacts must also install them. A workaround, but not really comfortable.
The reliable workaround: the travel eSIM. When you use an international eSIM like Holafly, your data traffic does not go through Du or e& but through a partner network abroad. The Emirati filtering no longer applies, and your WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work again as they do at home. It’s the same principle that allows some roaming plans to “work”: it all depends on where your connection is actually routed. To be honest, it’s not guaranteed 100% depending on the settings, but it’s by far the simplest and most reliable option.
And what about VPNs? You’ll read everywhere that a VPN unlocks WhatsApp in Dubai. Technically sometimes, yes. But we don’t recommend it: using a VPN to bypass telecom restrictions is legally in a gray area in the Emirates and can expose you to penalties, not to mention that it’s often unstable. The eSIM does the same job without that risk, which is why we highlight it.
The layover case. Many travelers only pass through Dubai, during an Emirates layover of 24 to 48 hours en route to Asia or Oceania. In this specific case, there’s no need to pay for a week of service: the free airport SIM (1 GB Du or 10 GB e&) is more than enough for data, and if you want to make calls, a Holafly eSIM for one or two days does the job. Segment according to your stay to avoid overpaying.
In summary: for the typical traveler who wants to keep their calls and zero paperwork, the Holafly eSIM is the most straightforward answer. The local SIM makes sense for long stays with high data consumption who are willing to forgo app-based calls.
SIM Card and eSIM in Dubai: your questions
Does WhatsApp and FaceTime work in Dubai?
The WhatsApp messages go through without any problems. It is the WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Skype calls that are blocked as soon as you are on a local Emirati network (Du or e&), by decision of the regulator. The simple workaround: a travel eSIM like Holafly, which routes data traffic through an international network instead of going through the Emirati operators. Your WhatsApp and FaceTime calls then work again like at home, in the vast majority of cases. On-site, the only officially authorized calling apps are Botim and C'Me.
Will my UK plan work in Dubai?
The UAE is outside free EU roaming and sits in every UK network's priciest Rest-of-World zone. Three and O2 charge about £7/day, Vodafone around £7.86/day, and EE up to £8.45/day for very little data. Budget MVNOs (Giffgaff, Tesco, Voxi, Lebara) usually don't cover the UAE at all. Worse, roaming still routes through the local network, so it does not unblock WhatsApp or FaceTime calls. Keep your UK SIM for texts and use a travel eSIM for data and calls.
Does the Holafly eSIM really unlock WhatsApp calls in Dubai?
Yes, in the vast majority of cases, because your data traffic goes through an international network and is therefore not filtered by Du or e&. It is not guaranteed 100% depending on the settings and the moment, but it is the legal and reliable option. In contrast, using a VPN to bypass telecom restrictions in the Emirates may expose you to sanctions and remains unstable: we do not recommend it.
Is there a free SIM card at Dubai airport?
Yes. Upon arrival at Dubai International (DXB), Du offers a tourist SIM with 1 GB valid for 24 hours, and e& (Etisalat) a free eSIM of 10 GB valid for 24 hours (scan of a QR code after immigration, 18 years and older, passport). Perfect for a layover or the first few hours, but no calls included, and since it's a local network, it doesn't unlock WhatsApp/FaceTime calls.
How much does an eSIM for Dubai cost?
At Holafly, unlimited data costs about £16 for 5 days and up to about £49 for 3 weeks. The code LAPLANETEDECARO gives you a 5% discount. If you consume little, limited volume eSIMs (Airalo, Saily) start cheaper, but you don't have the peace of mind of unlimited.
Du or Etisalat (e&), which one to choose for Dubai?
e& (Etisalat) is the historical operator with the best coverage: city, the entire coast, the desert, and Hatta. Du is the challenger, excellent in the city and on the coast (it is also the network used by the Holafly eSIM), a bit less consistent in the vast desert. For a beach or urban stay, both are suitable; if you are going on an excursion far into the desert, e& has a slight advantage.
Do you need a VPN in Dubai to make calls?
We do not recommend it. Using a VPN to bypass telecom blocks in the Emirates is in a legal gray area and can lead to penalties, not to mention that connections are often unstable. A travel eSIM does the same job (unblocking WhatsApp/FaceTime calls) in a simpler way and without this risk.
Is my phone eSIM compatible for Dubai?
Yes for most smartphones released since 2018: iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and beyond. You can keep your physical UK SIM active (to receive your bank SMS for example) and activate the Dubai eSIM for data, at the same time, on the same phone.
To go further: our other SIM card guides by destination
If Dubai is part of a larger tour of the Middle East, North Africa, or a layover to Asia, we’ve also written detailed guides with the same method and rigor for other Holafly destinations. Same logic, same real prices, same honest comparison.
Conclusion: what we honestly recommend
There you go, we’ve covered the three solutions. If you want the summary in one sentence: for a trip to Dubai where you want to keep your WhatsApp and FaceTime calls, get the Holafly eSIM with the code LAPLANETEDECARO, you save -5%, activate it from home, and you arrive already connected, with your calls working.
Before that, one reflex not to forget: check if your plan (an O2, Three, EE or Vodafone pass) already covers the UAE for data, it will save you an unnecessary expense. And if you’re going for a long time as a heavy data user without needing to call via apps, the local Du or e& SIM remains unbeatable on price.
If you have a question we haven’t covered, ask it in the comments, we’ll take the time to respond. And if you know other good tips to stay connected in Dubai, share them, it benefits the whole community.
Have a great trip to Dubai, and enjoy (the connection can wait five minutes when you’re watching the sunset from the 124th floor of the Burj Khalifa).
PS: if you happen to land at DXB after a seven-hour flight and you launch a WhatsApp call to your family while seeing the screen spinning into the void, you’ll remember this paragraph. Next time (or this time if you read this in time), your eSIM will already be activated, and you’ll pick up the video call calmly from the shuttle, looking like a traveler who has anticipated everything.
