What is Sagres – Portugal?

History of Sagres

Welcome to the beautiful town of Sagres, located in the southwest of Portugal. With its rich history, this small coastal town has much to offer curious visitors. Once an important port for navigators and explorers, Sagres is known as the cradle of navigation in Portugal.
Its history dates back to the times of the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, who established colonies in the region. However, Sagres reached its peak in the 15th century, becoming the starting point for the famous Portuguese maritime explorations.

Explorers such as Vasco da Gama and Henry the Navigator used the port of Sagres to prepare for their journeys to new horizons.

Today, you can still admire the remnants of this glorious era by visiting the Sagres Fortress, which offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.
The Cape St. Vincent Lighthouse
Saint Vincent Lighthouse SagresLocated a few kilometers from Sagres, the Cape St. Vincent Lighthouse is another fascinating testament to the region’s historical past. Built in 1846, this majestic lighthouse is the most western point of mainland Europe, offering a stunning view of the ocean. But Cape St. Vincent is more than just a lighthouse. Over the centuries, it has been a symbol of the end of the known world, where explorers ventured into the unknown.

Superstitious sailors even considered it a mystical place, where the ocean met the sky. Today, you can soak up this historic atmosphere by visiting Cape St. Vincent and enjoying the panoramic view of this land that was the starting point for so many bold adventures. So, take a break from your van journey and discover the captivating past of Sagres and Cape St. Vincent.

Geographical Location

Situated at the edge of mainland Europe, in the Algarve region of Portugal, its isolated location and wild nature make Sagres a true paradise for nature lovers and adventurers seeking new experiences.
With stunning cliffs, pristine beaches, and an unspoiled landscape, Sagres offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and adventure. The dramatic coastline is a haven for surfers, hikers, and anyone looking to connect with nature.

How to Get to Sagres?

To reach Sagres by campervan from neighboring Portuguese cities, here are some main routes to take:

  • From Lisbon, take the A2 highway south towards Almodôvar, then take the N267 towards Castro Verde and Mértola before joining the N125 to Sagres.
  • From Faro, take the N125 towards Lagos, then continue on the M537 towards Vila do Bispo before arriving in Sagres.
  • If you’re departing from Portimão, take the N125 northwest towards Vila do Bispo, then follow the M537 to Sagres.

The roads in the Algarve are very pleasant and generally well-maintained. We recommend taking the national roads, as the highways can be quite expensive compared to the local cost of living. Additionally, you’ll need a special toll badge, since the highways don’t have traditional toll booths but instead use gantries that automatically detect the badge. Given that Portugal isn’t exceptionally large, the time saved by using the highway isn’t substantial. However, it must be said that some highway sections offer a more beautiful landscape than the national roads!
