Ponta da Piedade
Ponta da Piedade is the postcard of the Algarve. The spot that everyone comes to see. The one we have seen, reviewed, photographed, filmed. And indeed, when we first knew it a few years ago, we can’t help but notice how much it has changed.
Back then, we arrived in a camper van, parking almost facing the cliffs. The path was muddy, rough, a bit haphazard. We walked along an old trail to reach the end, where the rocks jut out into the ocean. It was wild. Disorganized. But natural.
Today, it is paved. Structured. Framed.
There are well-designed parking lots, clean facilities, almost too clean. Seeing their size, we think that sooner or later, it will become paid. We feel that everything is becoming professionalized, that everything is slowly being monetized. And with the hotels popping up around, not quite by the sea but almost, the arrival almost gives an impression of Miami version Algarve.
An immediate visual shock
And then… after this little moment of “it was better before”, we must be honest: the shock is immediate.
Because it is beautiful. Really beautiful.
The cliffs are still there. Huge. Golden. Carved by erosion. The ocean crashes below. The contrast between the rock and the blue of the water remains striking. No matter the developments, the raw beauty of the site remains intact.
They have installed long wooden walkways on stilts to follow the cliffs. It is safer, and probably necessary, because there will always be someone who gets too close to the edge. Further on, the wood gives way to the earth, to the paths carved by millions of footsteps. We go down, we go up, we follow the natural slope.
At the end of the cliffs
At the very end, the view opens up almost to 360 degrees. On one side, the coast stretches towards Praia da Luz. On the other, the bay of Lagos extends far away, very far indeed. And in the middle, these gigantic cliffs. We feel small.
If the wind is there, it hits you right in the face. Charged with sea spray. Powerful. And in that moment, facing the Atlantic, we simply feel alive.
Descending to the ocean level
If you have good legs, you can descend the stairs that lead almost to the water’s edge. The descent is physical, and the ascent is even more so. But down there, the atmosphere changes completely.
Small boats await visitors. For a fee, they offer to take you to explore the natural arches and hidden caves at the foot of the cliffs. Viewed from the sea, Ponta da Piedade reveals yet another dimension.
A landscape that changes with the season
The photos presented here were taken in February, just after a whole month of rain. The landscape appears exceptionally green, almost surprising for the Algarve. Usually, the vegetation is drier, more golden. That year, the contrasts were particularly pronounced.
Between wonder and transformation
You will have understood, Ponta da Piedade remains a wonderful experience for those discovering it for the first time. The wonder is total.
But for those who knew it wilder, rougher, the gradual transformation can leave a slight pang in the heart. Year after year, the site takes on the airs of a very international seaside resort. A sort of Miami or California version Algarve.
And yet, despite everything, when we arrive at the edge of these cliffs, it is hard not to remain silent for a few seconds.
