Discovering Lagos by Camper Van: Complete Guide

Portugal VanTour Team 16 min

When you arrive in Lagos, you have to be honest: the first impression is not amazing. The outskirts of the city are made up of large, quite massive, modern buildings, sometimes a bit cold. It’s not particularly ugly, but it’s also not what you come looking for when you think of Portuguese authenticity in the Algarve.

And then, there’s that moment when you start walking towards the old town. You pass through stone arches, and then, something changes. You leave the main roads to enter a more intimate, tighter, more historical setting.

It’s at this precise moment that Lagos begins to unveil its secrets.

A typically Portuguese setting

In the old town, the codes are respected. You find Portuguese cobblestones on the ground, these stone mosaics that immediately give character to the streets. The facades are white, almost dazzling under the sun, often highlighted by a band of yellow, ochre, or burgundy, as is often seen in this part of the region. Some buildings are decorated with beautiful azulejos, these ceramic tiles that tell a story on their own. Visually, no doubt: you are indeed in Portugal….

But to the ear… it’s no longer quite Portugal

Because visually, we agree, everything is Portuguese. The white walls, the cobblestones, the azulejos… nothing to complain about. But as soon as you really start walking, straining your ears, listening to the conversations around you, you quickly realize there’s a disconnect.

I won’t lie to you: we hear very little Portuguese. We were struck by the amount of English in the streets. Not just a few passing tourists, no. A massive, constant, established presence. You can feel there’s a very strong link between the British and the Algarve. And here, in the center of Lagos, it goes even further.

You almost get the impression that the historic heart has been adopted, transformed, invested in. There’s something that resembles real gentrification.

And that’s where the contrast becomes interesting. You are surrounded by traditional Portuguese architecture… but the atmosphere is largely British. On the terraces, at any time of the day, you see pints of beer, glasses of wine, tables occupied for a long time. Moreover, this whole aspect is heavily fueled by the Surf influence or the world coming from this side of the globe to ride the waves. The number of surf shops is quite impressive! Add to that the rise of digital nomadism (we know what we’re talking about, right!) and you’ll add, in addition to our dear retired friends, a connected youth 🙂

Rua 25 de Abril: the revolution… ultra-touristy version

The heart of this dynamic is located around Rua 25 de Abril (a name found in almost every Portuguese city, in homage to the Carnation Revolution).

But here, it almost feels like the street of the Revolution has become the street of the revolution… ultra-touristy.

When we walked there, we immediately felt this chain effect. Restaurants follow one another, sometimes without any pause. In some places, you almost get the feeling of a continuous alignment of establishments designed primarily to capture the flow.

And again, to the ear, we understand that we are no longer quite in a classic Portuguese center, like its neighbor Albufeira.

You can find:

  • Bubble teas
  • Modern brunch spots
  • “Surf food”
  • Kebabs
  • Indian restaurants
  • English pubs
  • And, a bit drowned in the mix, a few more traditional Portuguese restaurants

We even came across these somewhat bewildering restaurants that only offer three things: pizzas, pasta, and burgers. Three universal specialties gathered on the same menu, without real coherence. This kind of concept, personally I don’t hope to eat well there, I just hope not to get sick after eating!

The English pubs, on the other hand, make no compromises. English football matches are broadcast, sometimes visible directly from the street. You walk among the white facades and azulejos, but in the background, it’s the Premier League.

Some establishments even display slogans like “best steak in town”. The grills, the decor, the overall atmosphere breathe more of the United Kingdom than southern Portugal. Add to that lounge bars with very prominent neon lights, beer photos in every direction… and you get a striking contrast with the traditional image one might expect.

Rue animée de Lagos, Portugal, avec boutiques et restaurants, ambiance conviviale et architecture traditionnelle.

Souvenir shops: a lot of standard… and one exception

In these same streets, souvenir shops are numerous. You find gadgets, mini surfboards, objects that literally ride on the surf image of the city. Many products look alike.

But if you had to remember just one, it would be Mar d’Estórias.

The facade is already remarkable. It’s beautiful, crafted, with decorative additions and a painting that artistically reproduces bones. Just the exterior is striking.

Inside, you discover a space organized over several floors. It’s not a small closed shop: the space is open, you can see the upper levels from the bottom, and vice versa. Walkways connect the floors, creating a real sense of volume and circulation.

The souvenirs offered are more elegant, more sought after. You are more in a concept store than in a standardized magnet shop.

And at the very top, by taking small stairs, you access a particularly cute rooftop. A small hidden terrace that offers a pleasant break above the hustle and bustle.

Quieter and more authentic places

Fortunately, Lagos is not limited to this large commercial artery. By moving slightly away, you discover squares where cars have no right. Pedestrian spaces lined with cafes.

You can encounter troubadours, violin musicians, street artists. The atmosphere is softer there. These are places where it’s really pleasant to have a coffee in the sun, without the constant flow of restaurants in a row.

The river, the port, and the municipal market

Like Tavira or Portimão, Lagos is cut by a river. Along this area, in the afternoon, if there’s not too much wind, a small market can set up. The place is pleasant for a stroll.

You can also spot a pirate ship often docked in the port. It adds an almost scenic touch to the maritime decor.

Opposite this area is the municipal market, with the date 1924 inscribed above the doors. It seems organized on several levels:

  • Ground floor dedicated to fish
  • First floor dedicated to fruits, vegetables, and horticulture
  • Top floor with a restaurant offering a panoramic view

Seeing a market on several floors is quite surprising. There is another similar example in Faro, where a market has been transformed into a space almost hybrid between a hall and a shopping center, but it remains striking.

And the roads in Lagos, are they good?

Good news for adventurers: the roads in Lagos are generally in good condition, making driving smooth and enjoyable, even in a van or motorhome. The main routes are well maintained, but if you really want to enjoy the scenery, focus on the coastal and rural roads. They are less crowded, perfect for a peaceful stroll with stunning views of the ocean and golden cliffs.

In the city, it’s a different story: in summer, traffic can be heavy, so it’s better to avoid peak hours and favor less crowded streets. Regarding equipment, think about suitable tires, especially if you plan to explore dirt trails or patchwork-style secondary paved roads.

What is the best time to explore Lagos?

If you want to fully enjoy Lagos, the best time is between May and September! With temperatures hovering between 25 and 30°C, you can enjoy the beaches, golden cliffs, and seaside walks without turning into a lobster.

If you’re a sun and fun person, July and August are made for you! But be careful, it’s also the high tourist season, so expect crowds and a lively atmosphere. Budget level for traveling in Lagos, you will need…

Well, like a large part of the Algarve now, you will need to pay a bit more attention than usual. You are not in Alentejo, prices in Portugal keep rising and you can guess that a city that speaks more English than Lusitanian has prices that are more English than Lusitanian! So as our little table above shows, we are not far from 50% more than in the rest of the country! Still affordable for Northern Europeans, but for how long?

What activities to do in Lagos?

Here is a list of activities we invite you to do in Lagos according to your tastes and preferences:

  • Sunset Cruise: Embark on a romantic cruise along the coast in Lagos, enjoying spectacular views of the rock formations. Admire the sunset while sipping a glass of wine, creating an intimate and unforgettable atmosphere.
  • Candlelit Dinner at Praia Dona Ana: Enjoy a candlelit meal on Praia Dona Ana beach, surrounded by the sound of the waves. Local restaurants offer delicious cuisine, perfect for a romantic evening by the ocean.
  • Kayaking at Ponta da Piedade: Explore the beautiful sea caves and rock formations by kayak. This duo adventure will allow you to share magical moments in nature, complemented by breathtaking views.
  • Couples Massage at the Spa: Treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in one of Lagos’ spas offering couples massages. Enjoy a calming atmosphere with soothing treatments, fostering intimacy and connection.
  • Picnic in the Shade of Trees: Prepare a romantic picnic and find a charming spot in a park or near the beach. Savor homemade dishes while listening to the birds sing and lounging together outdoors.

Lagos: between authenticity and transformation

In the end, Lagos gives the impression of a city in transition. An old town with undeniable Portuguese decor, but an atmosphere largely influenced by the international, particularly British. An omnipresent surf culture, a dense tourist offering, and at the same time peaceful squares, a historic market, a river, and a port that remind of its maritime roots.

It is not a frozen city. It is a lively, transformed, contrasting city. And it is precisely this mix that makes it interesting to observe.
