Description
The Luna Ultra is the very first gimbal camera from Insta360, and to be frank: for us, this is not just a passing fancy, we are going to order it. Our Sony ZV-E10 has given up the ghost, and rather than going back to a hybrid with a separate stabilizer, a dedicated bag, and three hands to carry everything, we are switching to this all-in-one device, co-designed with Leica. For a duo that films their travels, spots, and restaurants, it checks a lot of boxes at once.
On paper (and we will get back to this in detail, that’s the whole point), we are talking about a 1-inch sensor supported by a second telephoto module, 8K video, a 3-axis mechanical gimbal, and a detachable touchscreen. In short, the kind of technical specs that make you raise an eyebrow when you know a bit about the format. And no, this is not a niche camera reserved for pros: today everyone creates content, and the Luna clearly falls into the category of finished tools, more refined than the majority of what is available in this range.
Who is this camera for?
If you vlog, if you run a blog or a channel, or if you simply want to document your travels neatly, this is clearly for you. The Luna Ultra is designed for the creator who films a lot, often alone, and who is tired of lugging around a DSLR plus a stabilizer. AI tracking (the camera has a dedicated triple chip) keeps you in frame when filming solo, which solves the eternal problem of the vlogger alone behind their machine.
For us, the traveling duo, the argument is elsewhere: a single camera that provides stable images, sound, and a pocket format is what we were looking for to replace our hybrid setup that has become too cumbersome to manage daily.
What it really films: 8K, 1-inch sensor, and Leica
When we say it outperforms most competitors, it’s not just a phrase. The main sensor is 1 inch, accompanied by a second telephoto module (1/1.3 inch), all co-designed with Leica, resulting in 8K video at 30 frames per second (and up to 4K at 120 fps if you want clean slow motion). You also get 14 stops of dynamic range in I-Log 10 bits and Dolby Vision, in other words, the material to grade your shots without them collapsing as soon as there is contrast, like a sunset over the van, for example.
On the photo side, we go up to 37 MP, and up to 200 MP in panorama if you want to capture a landscape in full. The 1-12x zoom (in both photo and video) benefits from the dual lens to capture details without cropping everything in post.
The gimbal and detachable screen: why it changes filming
Here’s the point that really spoke to us. Filming a restaurant review with a camera or DSLR is hell: you point a big lens at the room, and the people at the next table stare at you as if you are filming a report. With the Luna, you discreetly place it in a corner of the table, and you film yourself via its 2-inch detachable touchscreen (the head separates from the body, that’s the principle of the removable module). You see yourself, you trigger, you adjust the frame, and no one feels watched. For this type of use, it’s simply a must-have.
The rest of the time, it’s the 3-axis mechanical gimbal that does the work: it physically stabilizes the image, not by digitally cropping into the sensor. In practice, you walk, you get into the van, you follow someone on a path, and the shot remains smooth. This is exactly what a hybrid alone cannot do without additional accessories.
The sound: built-in and wireless microphones
A good image with average sound remains an average video, we agree. The Luna has 4 microphones (three on the body, one on the detachable screen), and most importantly, it accepts Insta360’s in-house wireless microphones, the Mic Air and Mic Pro. So the day you want to speak clearly on camera, on a terrace or outside with wind, you clip on a microphone and get a clear voice without adding a whole sound kit. It’s the kind of detail that makes the difference between a quick test and a video we are proud to publish.
Compact for vanlife, travel, and flying
Insta360 is a brand we’ve always looked at from afar, but let’s be honest: 360 cameras have never been our thing, we didn’t really have a use for them in our videos. A pocket camera, however, yes, a thousand times. In vanlife and travel, every cubic centimeter counts, bags shrink as we optimize, and the Luna weighs 233 g. It takes up much less space than a camera with its lenses, it easily fits in cabin baggage, and it doesn’t make you hesitate to take it out because it’s too bulky. For the blog and vlog on the go, it’s the ideal partner.
Key features to know
The complete specifications table is just below, but here are the key points to keep in mind. The dual optics (1 inch + 1/1.3 inch telephoto) from Leica provide the quality; the 3-axis gimbal provides stability without accessories; the 2-inch detachable screen offers framing flexibility; the 233 g ensure portability. The battery life claims up to 240 minutes, the storage combines 47 GB internal and a microSD card up to 1 TB, and the connectivity (Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, USB-C 3.0) manages fast transfer to your phone or computer. Two colors available: Cosmic Black and Stellar White.
Why buy from Vantour?
Because here, you buy directly from Insta360, not from a third-party retailer: 100% authentic and official product, stocks managed directly by the brand (real availability, which matters for such a new product that might sell out quickly), and most importantly, customer service guaranteed by the manufacturer for the longest possible duration. No dubious opened box, no unclear warranty.
Note: the Luna Ultra comes in several packs (from Standard to Creator, including Essentials, POV, Vlog, and Endurance) that vary according to the included accessories. You choose the one that suits you directly at the time of ordering, on the same page.
On the pricing side, to give you a concrete idea:
We’re waiting for it eagerly
We’re being upfront: we haven’t had it in our hands yet, we are ordering it precisely to replace our Sony. So no fake test here, but a clear intention to buy and an opinion based on what these specs are worth and what we know about the brand. As soon as we have filmed with it for real, on the road and in restaurants, we will complete with our field feedback. In the meantime, if you have the same need as us, you already know what to expect.
