Description

The Insta360 GO Ultra is not the new GO 3S, and it's important to say that right away. It's a completely separate range: the tiny format that you carry on you from the GO series, but with the large sensor and intelligence of a real high-end action camera. Creators who have had it in hand all summarize it the same way, as "an Ace Pro 2 disguised as a GO 3S."

In concrete terms: a camera module weighing only 53 grams, magnetic, waterproof, that you clip onto a necklace under your t-shirt, on a cap, at the bottom of a fridge, or on a railing, and that films in 4K while keeping your hands free. For us who document vanlife and travel, it's exactly the kind of tool that was missing between the overly limited mini POV and the big camera that we never take out.

Who is the GO Ultra for?

It is primarily the camera for the content creator working alone. Filming yourself with one hand while cooking, doing DIY, or walking in a city is a nightmare with a smartphone or a DSLR. Here, you place it or wear it, press once, and you multiply the shots without ever thinking about the camera.

It targets three profiles: the vlogger and traveler who want clean images without being burdened, the athlete who needs their hands (cycling, skating, hiking, water activities), and the family who wants to capture vacations in POV without hauling a bag of equipment. However, it is not the camera for the professional colorist or the diver who alternates between surface and depth in the same outing (we'll come back to that below, honestly).

The camera you wear, not hold

Everything starts from there. The body is magnetic and really powerful: it sticks to any metallic surface and doesn't move, even in full action. The provided necklace slips under clothing, orients forward or downward, and a small anti-fall safety catches the camera if the magnet releases. The format is now square and shorter than the GO 3S, to the point of fitting into a glass for an improbable shot.

Around it, a whole ecosystem of accessories: cap clips, adhesive mounts, suction cups, headbands, and even a small remote ring to start and stop recording while changing the camera's position. That's the real strength: impossible creative angles to achieve with a classic camera, while remaining alone.

By day and by night: the sensor that changes everything

This is the real leap compared to the previous mini. The GO Ultra features a 1/1.28 inch 50 MP sensor, the same size as that of the large Ace Pro 2, which is 221% more than the GO 3S. Coupled with a 5 nm etched AI chip, it unlocks the PureVideo mode: where the previous generation saw nothing as soon as the light dropped, this one retrieves a usable image in a dark garage or at night on a ride.

It films in 4K up to 60 frames per second (including slow motion), manages HDR for very contrasted scenes, and offers a Free Frame mode to crop vertically or horizontally afterward. Let's be clear: it does not compete with an Ace Pro 2 in total darkness, but it is far above everything the mini range could do.

The Action Pod: screen, remote control, and battery life

The camera lives in a detachable case, the Action Pod, with a 2.5 inch foldable and tiltable screen to see yourself and adjust every parameter. You take the camera out of the pod when you want to play ultra-compact, while keeping real-time video feedback and remote control. No need for a smartphone to operate, it remains free for photos or to display a recipe.

On the endurance side, the major weak point of the GO 3S is addressed: 70 minutes with the camera alone, 200 minutes with the Action Pod, and a fast charge that goes from 0 to 80% in twelve minutes. A ten-minute break in the pod and you're off again, without the anxiety of battery life or the overheating of previous generations.

Hey Kira: the built-in AI voice assistant

This is the big new feature of the GO Ultra. Just say "Hey Kira" to wake an AI voice assistant right inside the camera, without pulling out your phone. Worn on the lanyard while travelling, it becomes a real travel companion.

  • Real-time translation: a face-to-face bilingual conversation, to order at a restaurant or ask for directions abroad.
  • Voice questions: the weather, a direction, an address, without stopping what you're doing.
  • Questions about what it sees: "what bridge is this?", "what plant is this?" and it analyses the scene to answer out loud.
  • Voiceprint recognition to hear you clearly even in noise.

The feature needs an Insta360 account connected to the app. Two prerequisites worth knowing before you buy, because neither is obvious: location access must be allowed on your phone (otherwise the assistant simply answers that it cannot do it, without ever saying why), and every request goes through your phone's internet connection. Abroad you therefore need a suitable data plan, which is exactly where the translation feature is most useful.

With your purchase, Insta360 includes a free year of Insta360+ cloud storage and three months of AI editing with Moments Pro, which turns your clips into a finished edit on its own.

Waterproof, robust, and the trick to know for water

The camera module is waterproof up to 10 meters and withstands drops, with a replaceable front lens, which is reassuring. However, be careful: it's the naked camera that dives, not the Action Pod (it has a USB port). And for sharp images underwater, you need to screw on the dedicated Aqualens lens, as the original lens, slightly convex, makes things blurry when submerged. A real point to keep in mind if you often film above and below water in the same outing.

Features to know

Storage is on a microSD card (no more internal memory, but a capacity you choose), FlowState stabilization remains excellent at three levels, and the image comes out in 8 bits with slightly punchy colors, very good for social media but just for advanced color grading. On the audio side, the internal mics with AI noise reduction are good, and you can plug in an Insta360 or DJI mic for an upgrade. It comes in Cosmic Black and Arctic White, the latter heating up a bit less in the sun.

Why buy from Vantour?

Because here you buy directly from Insta360, not from a third-party reseller: 100% authentic and official product, stock managed by the brand, and customer service provided by the manufacturer over time. It's the best trust-price ratio for a product that we will keep for years.

On the pricing side, to give you a concrete idea:

We take it for real

This time we do have ours in hand. We have been wearing it daily for several weeks in Portugal: at restaurants, outdoors, at the desk. What stands out from that real use is that it genuinely disappears into your day, and that the button on the camera itself is enough to start recording in under a second, with no phone and no Action Pod.

Our full test and our opinion cover everything else, including the two or three things nobody tells you before buying.

Our verdict

4.5
4.5/5 — Excellent Note from the editorial team Vantour

Benefits

  • 53 g hands-free format, magnetic, sticks anywhere
  • Large 1/1.28" sensor + PureVideo: a real low-light leap
  • 70/200 min battery life + 0-80% charge in 12 min
  • Detachable Action Pod with 2.5" screen (image feedback + remote)
  • Button on the camera itself: start recording in under a second, no phone needed
  • Switches to vertical format by simply turning the camera
  • "Hey Kira" AI voice assistant (translation, voice and image questions)
  • Waterproof to 10 m, replaceable front lens, rich accessory ecosystem

Disadvantages

  • Focus distance around 25 cm (optional Microlens kit for close-ups)
  • Aqualens lens essential (and easy to lose) for filming underwater
  • 8-bit image and no live/webcam mode
  • The AI assistant requires location access and your phone's data (costly abroad)
  • A fast microSD card is essential and not included: a slow card ruins the experience
  • In extreme low light it still sits below an Ace Pro 2

For the content creator, the vlogger, or the traveler who wants to film in hands-free POV with real image quality, without carrying a bulky camera. It's neither the camera of the professional colorist nor that of the diver who alternates between surface and depth in the same outing.
