Description
The GO 3S is the smallest 4K camera on the market, and that’s its whole point. A magnetic pebble weighing less than 40 grams that you can stick under a t-shirt, clip onto a cap, or place anywhere to film in a first-person view without having your hands occupied. In our Insta360 catalog, it’s the most discreet and lightweight option, aside from larger action cameras.
We won’t lie to you: we haven’t had it in our hands ourselves yet. What we’re telling you here comes from what creators say the most who use it daily, which we’ve cross-referenced, plus the official specifications verified on the Insta360 store. It’s a supplementary camera, not a main camera, and that’s exactly how you should see it to avoid disappointment.
Who is the GO 3S for?
It primarily targets those who want to film themselves while keeping their hands free. The vanlife vlog where you cook, tinker, and set up the van while the camera runs on its own on your chest. The first-person perspective, where pulling out a camera would break the moment or attract all the attention from the table next door. And light action, placed on a helmet, handlebars, or a paraglider wing, because it’s so small that you forget it’s there.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for a single camera that does it all, you might want to check out the Ace Pro 2: the GO 3S shines as a second or third camera, the one that captures shots that others can’t.
Features to know
The big news in this version is 4K. The GO 3 was capped at 2.5K and its image was a bit lacking; here we move to 3840 x 2160, with a real gain in sharpness on landscapes and backgrounds. The downside is the sensor: a small 1/2.3 inch sensor, which loves light and struggles much more in low light. Keep that in mind, we’ll come back to it later.
The rest fits in your pocket: 39 grams for the camera alone, waterproof up to 10 meters without a case, internal storage of 64 or 128 GB (no memory card, get the 128 GB if the budget allows), and the detachable Action Pod that serves as a screen and remote control. The complete specification table is just below.
The hands-free format, its true signature
This is the point that comes up in all creator feedback: once the camera is set up, you forget about it. The built-in magnet holds it on any metallic surface, the magnetic pendant slips under a t-shirt for a clean POV, the Easy Clip attaches it to a cap or bag. You start recording, put your hands away, and focus on what you’re doing. For natural vanlife filming or an immersive perspective, it’s exactly what you ask for from a camera of this size.
The 4K leap compared to the GO 3
Creators who already owned the GO 3 unanimously agree on one point: the image is significantly better. Foliage, distant views, everything that turned into mush on the old version comes out clean on the GO 3S. You also get the smart features inherited from the older siblings: the MegaView wide-angle with less distortion, automatic horizon correction, gesture and voice control, and slow motion up to 1080p at 200 frames per second.
An honest caveat often comes up, though: the Free Frame mode, which allowed the GO 3 to export the same video in 16:9 or vertical by utilizing the entire sensor, behaves differently here. The vertical format comes out as a zoomed crop of the 16:9 rather than a true 9:16 full sensor. Some creators are quite bothered by this and keep their GO 3 alongside. Insta360 often fixes this kind of issue through updates, but as of now, it’s a point to be aware of if this workflow is important to you.
In water and in motion
Big improvements in waterproofing: the naked camera now dives up to 10 meters, compared to 5 on the GO 3. For those spending time by or in the water, it’s a real change. Snorkeling, mask and fins, water sports where you take hits from falls: you’re safe up to 6 or 7 meters without a second thought. Just be careful, in the Action Pod it is only splash-resistant; it’s the camera alone that is waterproof to depth.
The Action Pod and battery life: what you need to know
The Action Pod is the screen part. You clip the camera onto it for classic action camera use, with a foldable touchscreen and all settings at your fingertips. Detached, the camera continues to film while the Pod serves as a live view and remote control a few meters away, and you can send your footage directly to your phone. Good news by the way: the Action Pod from the GO 3 is compatible, so if you already have one, you can buy the camera alone.
The point of caution is the battery life of the camera alone: around 38 minutes announced, a bit less in real conditions, compared to about 140 minutes with the Action Pod. And without the Pod, you can’t charge the camera directly, unless you go through the fast reader. For long days, plan for the Pod or pace your shots.
Where it shows its limits
We prefer to say it frankly, because this is what comes up most among users. Low light is not its strong suit: the small sensor means that the image degrades quickly when there’s not enough sunlight, and it remains a step below a true action camera like the Ace Pro for pure quality. The automatic vertical/horizontal switch (Easy Switch) can be surprising and ruin a shot if you’re not careful. The camera can heat up in 4K in high temperatures. And the Find My location feature is reserved for iPhones. Nothing prohibitive for its use, but it’s good to know what to expect.
GO 3S, Ace Pro 2, X5 or Luna Ultra: which one to choose?
In our Insta360 range, each has its role. The GO 3S compared to the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 is the tiny hands-free format versus the versatile action cam that excels in low light: as soon as you need to film at night or aim for the best image, it’s the Ace Pro 2. The Insta360 X5 plays the 360 cropping game for sports and action. The Insta360 Luna Ultra, on the other hand, is the vlog set on an all-in-one gimbal. Against a GoPro or a DJI Osmo Action, the GO 3S doesn’t play the specs race: it plays discretion and first-person view that no classic action cam does as well. We add it to the others rather than replace them.
