Arcachon Bay and sandbanks from the Dune du Pilat in La Teste-de-Buch

Arcachon Bay: Suzan the 206, the dune and oysters at La Teste

France Caroline & Xavier 9 min

For this stop around Arcachon Bay, Édouard had a rest at Caroline’s family home in La Teste-de-Buch. We borrowed a Peugeot 206 and called her Suzan. After sitting high up in the motorhome, Caroline felt as though she was driving along the ground. Quite a change of perspective… and very handy for our days out.

Our clearest memories are from La Teste and the Dune du Pilat: climbing through sand, that huge view, then oysters at the port. You can build several outings around them: Arcachon town, La Teste harbour, the dune and, if you’re heading down the coast, the stops further south.

Our French-language vlog follows the Dune du Pilat outing, oysters at La Teste-de-Buch harbour, then Mimizan. These are separate places around and beyond the bay, rather than three sights within Arcachon town.

Coming from Britain, allow for the Channel crossing and the drive down France’s Atlantic side before planning busy sightseeing days. If you fly and hire a car instead, choose your accommodation around the places you most want to see. Our French family base and borrowed car made this stop easier for us; they are not facilities included in your own motorhome trip.

Our base in La Teste-de-Buch, with Suzan for outings

We have family on Caroline’s side in La Teste-de-Buch, with enough space to accommodate the motorhome. That made planning our stay much easier: we didn’t have to search every evening for a parking area or a campsite around the bay. It’s also for this reason that I’m not giving you a review of a night spent in the public overnight pitches in Arcachon.

Édouard was parked at the family’s place, without breakdowns or mechanical drama. Suzan was simply our smaller car for getting around. In the video, Caroline discovers the steering wheel and the road much closer to her than in the Hymer. It seems that you quickly get used to looking down at cars.

Arcachon Bay, Arcachon town and La Teste are distinct places. La Teste is a neighboring municipality that also includes the area of the dune of Pilat. Arcachon occupies another part of the shore, with its centre, its waterfront, and its villa neighbourhoods. You can sleep in one and visit the other, but the travel time must remain in the plan.

The dune of Pilat: a climb in the sand that kept us busy

At the dune, we chose to climb in the sand rather than take the steps. In the film, we talked about roughly ten minutes of climbing, at our pace and given the conditions of that day. I wouldn’t take that figure as a promise: the slope, the heat, and how comfortable you are on sand make a big difference.

Once at the top, we had the forest on one side and the water on the other. Caroline compared the landscape to the desert, then to the moon, while jokes continued around the name Pilat or Pyla. I also managed to take up rather a lot of space in the video, which explains the title… For once I was playing the main role, I was hardly going to stay discreet.

The dune of Pilat is located in La Teste-de-Buch. Its height varies with the movements of the sand; I prefer to avoid giving you a fixed height to the nearest metre. The wind reshapes the site, and the panorama looks towards the bay, the ocean, and the sandbanks. What we were looking at actually moves over time, even if it doesn’t show during a photo pause.

The staircase is seasonal. The manager of the Grand Site installs it and then dismantles it to account for the mobility of the dune and winter. Check the access information for the dune of Pilat for parking, crowds, and current conditions. The path in the sand remains an effort; plan for water, sun protection, and footwear for when the sand gets hot.

Once on the ridge, save time to look before going back down. We made this outing a special moment, without rushing straight off to another sight. The film shows the relief, the wind, and our reactions; the conditions of our visit in autumn do not describe those of an afternoon in August.

Oysters at La Teste harbour: where we actually ate

In the area, we usually go to the port of La Teste-de-Buch for oysters. The address mentioned in our story is the Cabane du Paliquey. We had a platter there, with a terrine that also joined the table. It’s a memory from the port of La Teste, and not from a restaurant on the pier of Arcachon.

The vlog takes the time to show the tasting: Caroline in front of the platter, the oysters being opened and eaten, the accompanying comments. We were happy to settle around something we love to eat here. Unlike a list of five restaurants copied under a title, I can at least tell you why this moment stayed in our images.

If you want to go, check the oyster hut’s opening times and what it serves on your dates. Our old platter is not a current menu. If you prefer to have lunch in Arcachon, choose an address in the town and look at its menu; we haven’t eaten in every district and can’t pretend otherwise.

What to do in Arcachon itself: a day of walking to plan

To discover the town, I would suggest starting at the waterfront and the Thiers pier, then heading up towards the Mauresque park and the Ville d’Hiver. This gives two faces of Arcachon in the same day: the quays and the views of the bay, then the streets where the villas take up more space. It’s a suggested itinerary, distinct from our filmed scenes at the dune and in La Teste.

The Ville d’Hiver and the villas

The development of this part of Arcachon is linked to the Pereire brothers and the development of the railway in the 19th century. The resort sought to welcome visitors beyond just the swimming season, and the Ville d’Hiver took shape with its villas and leisure facilities. The tourist office explains this history in its presentation of the neighbourhoods of Arcachon.

The Mauresque park and the Sainte-Cécile observatory provide landmarks for this walk. The belvedere is located near the park; check its accessibility and any possible closures on site. If you are travelling with someone who has difficulty walking, prepare for the slopes and access before drawing a complete loop on the map. A short distance on the map can still leave your legs feeling it.

A day or several around the bay?

A day is suitable for a glimpse of the town. To add the dune, La Teste, and a crossing of the bay, give yourself several days and spread out the outings. Going to Cap Ferret is not simply continuing along the same waterfront: you can cross by boat or go around the bay by road. The two options do not have the same duration or constraints.

With children, I would keep one main visit and a short walk during the day. Without a car, organise the base accommodation and transportation before adding more excursions. We had the advantage of family on site and Suzan; you won’t automatically have that same convenience when arriving in your own motorhome.

We drive to a place, stay long enough to get it wrong a few times, then write the guide we wish we'd had: parking, timing, what's worth the detour.

Where to park and sleep in a motorhome in Arcachon?

The tourist office indicates that parking for motorhomes in the city is tolerated during the day off-season, provided that the spots and traffic are respected, but is prohibited at night. It points visitors towards options outside the town centre and specifically mentions the area on Boulevard Mestrezat. The conditions are listed on its dedicated page for motorhomes.

Before relying on this area, check the opening, available spots, and facilities. We did not sleep there. For the night, look for a spot explicitly adapted for this use; a parking area allowed during the day does not automatically grant the right to sleep there.

The motorhome travel apps are useful for comparing recent information, but the local rule remains to be checked. If you are hesitating between camping and an area, our article on places to sleep on a road trip covers the criteria we use. And prepare the motorhome waste disposal separately: the presence of a parking area does not mean it has a motorhome service point.

Mimizan and the road south through the Landes

After the bay, our video continues in Mimizan. We find the dunes, the beach, and the sun setting over the ocean. It’s another stop, in the Landes, south of the Arcachon Bay. The images do not serve to illustrate a beach in the centre of Arcachon.

This continuation works for a road trip down the coast. Further south, we also recounted our stop in Hossegor in November, then San Sebastián in a motorhome on the Spanish side. These are extensions of the itinerary, with kilometres between them, not excursions to stack in the same day from Arcachon.

Hossegor in November: the ocean, the sand and Caroline wanting to stay

Caroline found Hossegor splendid, incredible and magnificent... eventually I admitted she had a point. Our November stop on the Landes coast, complete with sand in the clothes.

The landmarks of the town are separated from the dune and the port of La Teste. The private space at our family’s home is not a public overnight stop for travellers.

When to visit Arcachon Bay and what to budget for

We usually return after the peak of summer, and the vlog stay takes place in autumn. It’s a period we appreciated in the area, with the possibility of walking and reconnecting with family. It does not guarantee either the sun or the opening of all activities; check the weather and schedules before moving.

Arcachon : more questions

Can you take a boat from Arcachon to Cap Ferret?
Yes. The tourist office lists a regular service between Jetée Thiers and Jetée Bélisaire at Cap Ferret, taking roughly thirty minutes. Check the current boat services for times and conditions, particularly if you want to take a bicycle.
Can dogs go up the Dune du Pilat?
The site manager allows dogs on leads in the visitor reception area and on the dune, but not on the beach under the published conditions. Take water, avoid hot sand and read the Grand Site visitor guidance before going.
What can you do around Arcachon when it rains?
Plan a food stop, an indoor visit confirmed open on your dates or a short walk between showers. Move the dune climb and longer coastal walks if conditions deteriorate. Check venues before setting out: an old guide mentioning a museum or activity is no guarantee that it is still open.

France, and the rest of the road

Two years of full-time van life, and the Algarve as our base ever since. We still hit the road, by van or otherwise, and we write up what we find along the way. An email when we have something to say, no more.
