What is Amboise, France?

History of Amboise

Amboise is a small town in the Loire Valley where French history marches forward on its worn cobblestones! Imagine if the city’s walls could tell stories that rival the most heroic legends. Since the Middle Ages, this city strategically located on the banks of the Loire River has witnessed the splendor of French royalty. Young Charles VIII, enchanted by its rolling hills and calm waters, decided to turn it into a royal fortress. He transformed the medieval castle into a magnificent Renaissance palace. It was royal love at first sight!

With the help of the silver thread of the Loire River, Amboise weaves its stories into history. The city has seen kings born and died in its stone arms. And what about Leonardo da Vinci? A brilliant thinker of the Renaissance favoured by François I, he spent his later years at the Manoir de Clos Lucé, where he perfected his writings and inventions? Wandering through its streets, you can almost hear his thoughts fluttering between the old bricks at every corner. Amboise makes you feel like you have stepped back in time, with every street corner whispering stories of a bygone era.

Location

This Loire gem is just a stone’s throw from Tours, proudly standing beside the royal river Loire, like a silver ribbon winding through stunning scenery. Sitting on a green base, Amboise is less than 100km from the City of Light, Paris, and also close to Orleans, which is historically linked to Joan of Arc. There are no mountains as high as the Alps here, but don’t be discouraged – the beauty of the surrounding rolling hills and the mysterious Amboise Forest are natural gems as impressive as the Northern Lights.

We discovered Amboise in one day, after quite a long bike ride from the Château de Nitray. It took around 45 minutes each way, and let me tell you, we slept well that night!

Specialties of Amboise

Once you’ve chosen a restaurant, here’s a glimpse of traditional dishes served in this region: rillettes de Tours, tarte Tatin, and don’t forget the delicious Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine goat cheese.

We’ve got to be honest here, after pedaling so many kilometers (miles), we needed something substantial. So, we didn’t eat at any of the restaurants mentioned above, but instead, we devoured a pizza at La Scaleta restaurant. It doesn’t sound dreamy, it’s not traditional, and frankly, it wasn’t anything to write home about!

You know how it is after a long bike ride, right? Sometimes you just crave something filling and familiar. The pizza hit the spot, but it wasn’t particularly memorable.
